Records were broken on the UK version of The Chase this week as contestants walked away with a whopping £100,000 (AU $178,499) after beating Anne “The Governess” Hegerty.
The team of four, Diane, Luca, Tim and Gayna took home the highest amount to ever be given away on the television show, claiming an impressive £25,000 each, The Mirror reports.
It’s not often The Governess gets beaten but the team were clearly in it to win it as they managed to gain a total of 21 steps on the board.
While she tried to fight back and send the challengers on their way without any cash in hand, The Governess wasn’t having the best of days, failing to correctly answer nine questions and giving the team more opportunities to win.
Although they couldn’t gather up the right answers for all nine questions they did successfully push her back four times, making the fight to the end all that more nerve-wracking.
In the end, the challengers walked away the winners, as The Governess ran out of time with 14 steps to go.
It was a momentous occasion for the team who were incredibly thankful for Gayna, who chose to take the higher offer of £86,000 during her first quiz.
The Chase has become a widely popular show throughout the UK and Australia with thousands of viewers tuning in throughout the afternoon.
Earlier this year, one of the smartest chasers, Mark “The Beast” Labbett left fans in shock after he was completely stumped by a question he should have known the answer to.
In a world first for the 52-year-old, he didn’t even push his button in an attempt to answer the question.
During one of the rounds, host Bradley Walsh asked The Beast a question about British soap EastEnders.
“Charlie Jones and Joshua Pascoe have both played which EastEnders character?” asked Walsh.
Labbett could choose from either Peter Beale, Ben Mitchell or Martin Fowler. While he’s usually quick to answer questions, the Chaser sat behind his desk without pressing a button or moving. Eventually, he had waited so long that Walsh needed to continue with the show.
Labbett was clearly shocked he was unable to answer the question.
“That’s never happened,” he said. “Ever.”
