With many votes still to be cast in the Australian Marriage Postal Law Survey, the jury is still out on whether Australian postal voters will choose to support marriage equality.

To encourage change, Sir Elton John has weighed in on the same-sex marriage issue with a heartfelt message to his Australian fans.

Sir Elton has every reason to feel strongly about the issue. The legendary singer has been in a relationship with longtime partner David Furnish since 1993. They were not allowed to enter a civil partnership until 2005 – and did so on the very first day it was permitted in England.

Only in 2014 – 21 years into their relationship and nine years into their civil union – were they finally able to marry in the UK.

His emotional plea was shared by YesFest, an upcoming Sydney benefit concert held in support of marriage equality. Confirmed headliners include Jimmy Barnes, a vocal supporter of the “Vote Yes” campaign.

When Sir Elton found himself unable to attend, he threw his support behind the cause remotely.

“Will you vote yes?” asks Sir Elton in the video.

“It is a vote for freedom, in a world where freedoms of all kinds have been hard fought and should not have been taken for granted, every individual needs to have their personal freedom and to live their lives as they fit.”

‘We are not asking for anything that is not given freely to the majority of society. Let’s not be an exception here in Australia.”

“This is, after all, the 21st century.”

Do you agree with Sir Elton’s words?
