Did you ever lock your love on a bridge? Look what they did!

In the many years I have travelled the world my husband and I have locked our love onto a few bridges.  One of these was the Pont Des Arts bridge in Paris, which, on the day we were engaged, 20 years ago, we walked across and locked our love on. Just last week the Pont Des Arts bridge started to crumble under the weight of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of “love locks” that had built up on its railings until a chunk of the bridge fell away causing tourists to be evacuated from the previously crucial tourist attraction.  And this week the padlocks that so many people had sought out and locked onto the railings with their own personal insignia will become landfill (or if we’re lucky recycling waste).

In our many years of travelling we have locked our love onto more than five bridges in Europe, first as a young couple, then as an older couple, then as as a family.  Each moment was special, and it is a little bit sad to think that those locks might not last forever.  I guess it was sill to think they might really.

Today though, the Pont Des Arts railings of locked love were replaced with street art that frankly leaves a lot to be desired.  And it leads us to the thoughts about just how many of us over the years have locked our love on bridges and which bridges they are.

Today, we pay tribute to this beautiful landmark for everything that it was, and mourn the loss of the locks.

What do you think of the removal of the locks on the bridge and what they have been replaced with – spraycan artistry that now makes us all forlorn for the locks of love, rather than the banisters of spray paint.

Tell us where you have left a love lock in this world?

This beautiful bridge of so many locks and so much history has this week been transformed into this…
