Fiji is often pictured as a paradise of luxury resorts, stunning beaches, and warm hospitality, and while that’s true, there is so much more to discover beyond the usual tourist hotspots.
On a recent trip, my husband and I had the chance to experience Fiji in a way that was both exciting and deeply authentic. From a comfortable flight with Fiji Airways to an unforgettable fishing adventure and an exclusive cruise to the remote Lau Islands, here is why you should explore Fiji differently.
Flying from Brisbane to Fiji with Fiji Airways was a great start to the trip. We flew economy class, comfortable seats with good legroom, and the food was surprisingly good for airline meals. But what stood out the most? The crew! Friendly, warm, and incredibly helpful, exactly what you would expect from Fijian hospitality. A great way to start this unforgettable trip.
Denarau Island is home to some of Fiji’s breathtaking luxury resorts, and we stayed at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, a fantastic choice for comfort and relaxation.
Our room was spacious, spotless, and well-equipped for a restful stay. One of the highlights was dining at the resort’s restaurants. With my Accor Plus membership, I enjoyed 50 per cent off all food, which made indulging in the delicious menu even more satisfying. The variety of dishes, fresh ingredients, and incredible flavours truly impressed me. And, of course, the service was top-notch; every staff member went above and beyond with their famous Fijian smiles.
One of my favourite experiences was an offshore fishing trip with the boys from Local Offshore Fishing. The boat was well-maintained (complete with a toilet, a huge plus for comfort), and the fishing was fantastic. We caught plenty of fish, but the highlight for me? Catching my first yellowfin tuna! The thrill of the catch, the peacefulness of being out on the ocean, and the camaraderie with the locals made it a day to remember and an experience we will return to do again.
The most extraordinary part of our trip was a cruise to the Southern Lau Islands aboard MS Caledonian Skye with Captain Cook Cruises Fiji. Unfortunately, this trip is no longer available, but I feel fortunate to have experienced it.
We visited tiny islands that are rarely visited by tourists, each more breathtaking than the last. The water was crystal-clear, the snorkeling was unreal, and the beaches were simply perfect. But what made this journey truly special was the cultural experience.
Village Visits: We were welcomed into small villages where the warmth of the Fijian people shone through.
Cultural Performances: Traditional music and dance performances showcased Fiji’s vibrant heritage.
School Visit: Meeting local children and teachers was a heartwarming experience; they even sang for us, making it a truly special moment.
See Fiji Differently: Get Off the Beaten Path
Fiji is more than just its famous resorts, it’s a place of rich culture, incredible marine life, and unique adventures. If you want to see Fiji differently, venture beyond Denarau and the Coral Coast. Visit the outer islands, go fishing with the locals, and immerse yourself in the true spirit of Fiji.
