The cheapest day of the week to fly revealed

When you’re retired, everyday feels like a Friday, but the last day of the working week will now have a whole new meaning.

According to a new study by Kayak, the cheapest day of the week to fly is on a Friday. Condé Nast Traveler reported that not only is Friday the cheapest day of the week to fly, but you can also stand to save on average $100.

The cheapest day when coming home from a holiday is a little different, though, because people tend to make sure they’re back from a holiday to be back at work on a Monday.

But, again, the great thing about being retired is that we’re not bound by the limitations of the working week so we can truly take advantage of reduced prices.

For that very reason, Monday turns out to be a particularly good day to return home, and Kayak found that travellers can stand to save $100 on the return journey, too.

If you’re thinking that this is just the case for international or domestic flights, think again, because Kayak analysed their data between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 for both local and overseas flights.

While there’s no real science to getting the cheapest flight, it’s great to see that there are some trends that allow travellers to plan a holiday, even when on a budget.

If you want to save even more money on your travels, then take a look at these helpful tips.

  • Travel during off-peak times. Travelling to some destinations are more expensive at certain times of the year than others. Do your research first and travel in the shoulder or low seasons to save some extra cash
  • Sign up to mailing lists. Join the mailing lists of your favourite carriers and travel companies as they tend to reward their customers by showing them the best deals and specials via email first. You can join ours here
  • Choose indirect flights. By taking the long way around, you can potentially save on your flight cost than if you were to take a direct flight. You could also make the layover an extra little holiday
  • Pack a treat. Rather than spending up big at the airport food court, bring your own budget-friendly snacks and treats
