We’ve all been there: that dreaded moment at the end of a pleasant meal with friends, when the waiter comes over with the bill.
In a perfect world someone whips out their credit card and casually says, “No problem, it’s on me”.
But back in the real world, a group of people paying one bill can be a bit of a nuisance – or a complete nightmare.
One might want everyone to split the bill evenly, while another may insist they’re only paying for what they actually ordered. Somebody will wave their Amex around, while another will come prepared with a wad of cash. And then, of course, there’s the tip…
Sorting it all out requires a degree in advanced mathematics and the skills of a seasoned diplomat.
And that’s just for a one night out at your favourite local restaurant.
When you’re travelling with friends and sharing all sorts of costs over an extended period of time, things can get super complicated.
Even if you prepay for big-ticket items like accommodation and hire cars, who wants to spend precious time sorting out all the other bills when you’re supposed to be on holiday mode?
Thankfully, there are plenty of apps available that are designed to split bills – rather than friendships.
They’ve been around for a few years now, but if you haven’t downloaded one yet and will shortly head off on holiday with a group of friends, get thee to the App Store stat.
Available for iOS, Android or both, each app offers an easy way to split any expenses with your travel buddies and help you keep tabs on who has paid (and more importantly, who hasn’t!).
The app will do the maths for you and split bills automatically, or break down the costs as needed, according to who owes what.
It will not only do all the calculating, but can also track payments and even send out reminders to anyone who forgets to cough up their share.
Most of the apps are free or only charge a small percentage per person (which might sound potentially expensive, but is generally cheaper than the fee you’d pay to get cash out from an ATM).
And when your holiday is over, you’ll still be able to use your new app the next time you go out to dinner.
There are lots of similarities between the apps, but there are differences as well, so be sure to research them before making your final choice.
