7 strange hangover cures from around the world

There’s nothing worse than waking up with a splitting headache after a big night on the booze, and it feels even worse if you’re on holiday. But if you don’t have time to make a big greasy breakfast or simply want to try what the locals do, here are a few weird and wacky remedies that we’ve come across. Although, some of them will make you want to stick with the hangover instead.

1. Umeboshi plums, Japan

This pickled fruit is claimed to be a cure for a hangover in Japan due to the healthy bacteria thanks to the fermentation process. These little balls of goodness are very sour, though, so you’re not going to want to eat them by themselves, but rather have them in a meal with some rice.

2. Duck embryo, Philippines

You might be happy to deal with a headache and forego this remedy, but fertilized duck embryo, or Balut as it is known in the Philippines, is a traditional hangover cure. The egg is said to contain cysteine, which is an amino acid that can break down toxins in the liver.

3. Pickled herring, Germany

If you thought a hangover breakfast in Germany was a big greasy pile of bacon and eggs, think again. Here you’re much more likely to be offered pickled herring wrapped around a pickle and some onion. Herring hot dogs are particularly popular, too!

Haejangguk is the term used or any soup that is use to get rid of a hangover and the word actually means ‘soup to chase a hangover’. While the stand meat, vegetables and stock are key elements of the dish, it’s the congealed ox blood that really gives it its kick. 

5. Pickle juice, Russia

Russians are known for their love of vodka so no doubt they’ve got a good idea of what hangover cure do and don’t work. If you find yourself with a sore head after a big night in Russia you might just be offered a glass of pickle juice. It’s said that a quarter cup of pickle juice is enough to replenish your electrolytes quick smart. 

6. Poutine, Canada

Chips can just about cure any hangover but Canadian poutine, with its cheese curd and gravy, will leave you with that warm and fuzzy feeling that a greasy meal is so good at doing.

7. Bull penis jerky, Italy

If you like your dried meats than the bull penis jerky from Sicily might be right up your alley. According to the locals it not only gets ride of a hangover but it can restore your energy and even your sex drive.
