Three matches lit up the NRL yesterday, with the Melbourne Storm producing a second-half blitz, the Wests Tigers delivering a statement victory, and the Penrith Panthers holding off the Cronulla Sharks in a gripping contest.

Here’s how the action unfolded across the day.

Storm unleash second-half blitz to crush Dragons

Melbourne Storm turned a tight contest into a one-sided affair with a devastating attacking burst to defeat the St George Illawarra Dragons 46–20 at WIN Stadium.

The match began with plenty of promise for the Dragons, who showed early energy in front of their home crowd. For much of the first half the teams traded tries and momentum swung both ways, with the hosts showing signs they could match one of the competition heavyweights.

But once Melbourne found its rhythm the contest quickly slipped away from the Dragons.

Storm fullback Sua Fa’alogo was the star of the match, producing a stunning purple patch that included a rapid-fire hat-trick of tries that blew the game open. The young speedster’s finishing ability and support play had the Dragons defence scrambling as Melbourne piled on points.

Melbourne’s spine controlled the tempo and repeatedly exposed gaps in the Dragons’ defensive line, turning what had been a competitive contest into a comfortable victory by the final siren.

The Storm’s ability to accelerate in the second half once again highlighted why they remain among the competition’s most dangerous sides. Their combination of speed out wide and composure in attack proved too much for the Dragons to contain.

For St George Illawarra, the defeat will sting after a promising start. The side showed glimpses of attacking creativity but struggled to contain Melbourne once the visitors lifted the intensity.

The Dragons will now need to regroup quickly as they search for consistency early in the season, while the Storm leave Wollongong with a strong confidence boost after an emphatic attacking performance.

Wests Tigers roar to big win over Cowboys

The Wests Tigers produced one of the most impressive performances of the round, thrashing the North Queensland Cowboys 44–16 at Leichhardt Oval.

In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Tigers were sharp from the opening whistle and quickly set the tone with fast, aggressive attacking play.

The hosts dominated territory and possession during the first half, repeatedly punching holes through the Cowboys’ defensive line. Their attacking structure clicked beautifully, with quick ball movement creating space for runners on the edges.

By halftime the Tigers had already built a strong lead, leaving the Cowboys chasing the game.

North Queensland attempted to respond after the break, managing a couple of tries that briefly threatened to tighten the contest. However, the Tigers’ energy never dropped and they continued to find ways through the Cowboys defence.

Several players stood out for the Tigers, whose forward pack laid the foundation with strong carries and relentless pressure in the middle of the field. With the platform created up front, their backs were able to take advantage of the space and produce a series of exciting attacking plays.

The victory marked a significant confidence boost for the Tigers and delighted the Leichhardt Oval faithful, who watched their side run in a flurry of tries in an entertaining display.

For the Cowboys, the heavy defeat highlighted defensive issues they will need to address quickly. Despite moments of attacking promise, they struggled to contain the Tigers’ speed and creativity.

Panthers hold off Sharks in intense battle

Penrith have continued their impressive start to the NRL season and their domination of Cronulla, with winger Tom Jenkins extending his try-scoring spree.

Following their opening romp against premiers Brisbane, the Panthers easily outclassed the Sharks with a 26-6 victory at Bathurst’s Carrington Park, conceding their only points of 2026 in the 58th minute.

Saturday’s win was the Panthers’ 10th in their past 11 matches against the Sharks.

Jenkins backed up his brace against the Broncos with another two tries to leap to the top of the NRL season try-scoring tally.

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary was pleased with his team’s display, already eclipsing last year’s tough 1-5 win-loss run to open the season.

“I was really happy – I thought we worked for everything we got tonight and were defensively good again,” he said.

“Things have started well for us, things we’ve worked on in pre-season, things we value are showing up, and if that’s the case, we’ll give ourselves a good chance each week.”

Superstar halfback Nathan Cleary swung momentum Penrith’s way early with a 40:20 kick in the fifth minute, and one tackle later winger Brian To’o crossed for the first try of the night.

On the back of an impressive completion rate and suffocating defence, the Panthers extended the lead to 18-0 by halftime.
