British talent releases track that peaks charts in 1961

This musician, knighted by Her Majesty in 1995, has had a career that has spanned almost 50 years.

On this day in 1961, he released a song that was the soundtrack for a movie of the same name.

With its soaring violin parts and swooning lyrics, the track was popular with romantics of all ages.

The track went to number one in the UK singles charts shortly after its release, where it remained for over nine weeks.

The songs popularity also saw it reach the number one position in eight other countries, including Australia, New Zealand and Spain.
