Prime Minister Scott Morrison has let slip that the upcoming election will be held in May 2022.

In an interview with 2GB host Ben Fordham, Morrison was hit with a last-minute question on the looming election.

“I’ve got 15 seconds to the news, are you calling an election this weekend?,” Fordham questioned.

Morrison answered: “The election will be in mid-May.”

Fordham then accused Morrison of dodging the inquiry.

“You’re not answering the question,” he said.

Morrison responded: “Well when the election is called, everybody will know.”

“We’re not far away now. And you know, our opponents on Thursday night, the Labor Party has got to stand up and say what they would do in a Budget. We’ve waited for three years for them to tell us what they’re going to do.

“They say there’s going to be a mini-budget in September. Well, Australians want to know what they plan to do now. And on Thursday night, Mr Albanese has to tell the country what is his alternative plan. He’s not a small target. He’s a vacant space. And Australians can’t afford a vacant space.”

According to the latest Roy Morgan poll research, the ALP is currently in the lead with 55.5 per cent with LNP sitting at 44.5 per cent, up 2.5 per cent since the last data release.

Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine said “the drop in support for the ALP came entirely from women whereas support for the two parties amongst men was unchanged from a week ago.”

“The political discussion over the last week has centred on the bullying allegations leveled against three ALP Senators – Penny Wong, Kristina Keneally and Katy Gallagher following the tragic death of their colleague Senator Kimberley Kitching,” she said.

“The issue has played out extensively in the media and has had a direct impact on women’s support for the ALP.”
