Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is once again making headlines, ensuring the world’s eyes remain fixed on him after yet another Wimbledon win
Following his annihilation of Filip Krajinovic in the second round of his Thursday night match, June 30, the 27-year-old tennis star flagged the end of his career.
Speaking to the Tennis Channel Kyrgios claimed he believed he played some of the best tennis of his career but declared that he only sees himself in the sport for another two to three years, saying that he wanted to settle down and start a family.
For now, Kyrgios still intends on competing in more games and is citing Thursday night’s performance as a reminder of how serious he is about the sport.
“I just wanted to remind everyone that I’m pretty good,” he said with a straight face during his on-court interview.
“I couldn’t have played better.”
He later added: “I know what I bring to the sport. I’m one of the most important people in the sport.
“Do you want to speak about that? Nothing to investigate there because it’s just factual.
“I’m extremely confident in myself. All the challenges I’ve overcome in my life.
“I’m proud to be up here and doing it my own way.
“Being able to produce tennis like that at Wimbledon, it’s a dream come true for any tennis player.”
The bombshell retirement announcement comes just after Kyrgios’s shocking behaviour after his first-round win on Tuesday.
Living up to his self-styled role as the villain on the court, Kyrgios not only fought with the umpire, spectators and line judge, but he has also admitted to spitting at a spectator saying he was fed up with the alleged verbal abuse and racial taunts directly aimed at him throughout the match.
“I would not be doing that to someone who was supporting me,” Kygrios had said.
“A lot of disrespect was being thrown today from the crowds. I’m just starting to think that it’s normal when it’s really not.
“I didn’t say anything to the crowd until they started just every time I came down to the far end, people just going. It’s just I don’t know if it’s normal or not.”
Regardless of his justification, the tennis world was appalled by his actions with fans labelling him as “vile” and “disgusting”.
But for all his rich potential and continuous bragging, Kyrgios has yet to make a grand slam semi-final and currently ranks No. 13 in the world.
