As billions of people around the world geared up to watch Meghan Markle become HRH Princess Henry of Wales at the weekend, comedian Catherine Deveny took to Twitter to troll the former actress in a series of cruel tweets.

The Melbourne-based comic aimed a tirade of criticism at the new Duchess of Sussex as she prepared to tie the knot in a lavish ceremony at Windsor Castle on Saturday.

Deveny initially called out the 36-year-old bride for accepting her father-in-law’s offer to accompany her in the absence of her own father, Thomas Markle, who was forced to miss the wedding due to ill health.

Deveny implied that Meghan’s choice to be escorted by a male means she cannot be a feminist, despite entering the chapel and walking halfway down the aisle unaccompanied.

She wrote: “Meghan Markle : I am a feminist.

“Also Meghan Markle : My father can’t walk me down the aisle and give me away so I have to have some man do it because I can’t possibly walk down on my own so my boyfriend’s father is going to do it.”

The controversial tweet angered many of Meghan’s supporters who replied to the tweet in her defence. But that didn’t deter Deveny from continuing to berate the newest member of the Royal family.

She then retweeted a post from another Twitter user, comparing the hefty price-tag of Meghan Markle’s bespoke Givenchy wedding gown to the amount it would have cost to upgrade the unsafe cladding on Grenfell Tower.

A deadly fire ripped through Grenfell Tower, in West London, on 14 June, 2017, tragically killing 71 people. It was revealed that the blaze spread more quickly than expected due to the combustible polyethylene-filled aluminium panels used to clad the building.

Deveny’s third and final royal wedding dig was to declare heterosexual marriage as a big “oppressor of women”.

She said: “I regard heterosexual marriage as a much more important feminist issue and bigger oppressor of women than the burka.

“Even more so today #RoyalWedding.”

Deveny previously sparked outrage when she posted a series of tweets on Anzac Day earlier this year that labelled soldiers and veterans as “ignorant” and “uneducated”.

She also dubbed the annual remembrance day “Bogan Halloween” and claimed military service is “just a job”.

Deveny wrote: “Why do people in the armed forces use the word ‘serve’ to describe their work despite it being no more dangerous or prone to upheaval than many other jobs? It’s just a job and work.

“Throw the term ‘serve’ in the bin. It’s part of the fetishisation of war and violence.”

What do you think of Deveny’s latest comments? Can you be walked down the aisle by a man at your wedding and still be a feminist?
