As the sun sets on Sunday, January 14 a landmark chapter will unfold in Denmark’s regal history, with Queen Margrethe gracefully relinquishing the throne after an impressive 52-year reign.

Her departure sets the stage for the emergence of a new era as Crown Prince Frederik, alongside Australia’s beloved Princess Mary take their place as King and Queen of Denmark.

While anticipation mounts across the world for the historic moment, Denmark will be keeping things simple when transitioning monarchs.

Unlike the grand coronation for King Charles III in the UK last year, Denmark will opt for a straightforward proclamation ceremony at the nation’s centre of power.

The historic occasion kicks off at 1:35 pm local time in Copenhagen (11:35 pm Sunday night AEDT) as Crown Prince Frederik, accompanied by Princess Mary and their son Prince Christian, embark on a journey from Frederik VIII’s Palace, Amalienborg, to the majestic Christiansborg Palace.

At the same time, Queen Margrethe will take her final carriage ride as Queen to Christiansborg Palace, accompanied by the Guard Hussar Regiment, symbolising the passing of the torch to the next generation.

Formal proceedings begin at 2 pm (midnight AEDT) during a Council of State Meeting. Surrounded by government officials, the Crown Prince, Princess Mary, and Prince Christian, Queen Margrethe will formally step down, signing a declaration that officially marks the end of her reign. She will then depart the palace by car, gracefully closing this chapter in Danish history.

The newly crowned King and Queen will then host an intimate function at 2:30 pm (12:30 am AEDT) for specially invited guests, setting the tone for their reign in a more private setting.

At 3 pm (1 am AEDT), Denmark’s Prime Minister will proclaim the accession of His Majesty King Frederik X to the throne, followed by the King addressing the nation from the palace balcony. A regal salute at 3:10 pm (1:10 am AEDT), marked by cannons and the changing of the royal standard, symbolising the smooth transition within the Danish monarchy.

The King and Queen, escorted by carriage at 3:30 pm (1:30 am AEDT), will make their way to Frederik VIII’s Palace, embracing their new roles.

The celebrations continue into the following day with a reception at 10 am on Monday (8 pm AEDT) in the Danish Parliament, where members of the Royal Family join in commemorating the succession to the throne.

As Denmark ushers in this new chapter, the world watches with bated breath, witnessing a momentous occasion that blends the allure of history with the promise of a captivating future.
