Prince Philip has made his first public appearance since undergoing a major hip replacement surgery in London last month.

With Queen Elizabeth II by his side, the Duke of Edenborough was out and about as the couple made a surprise visit to the Royal Windsor Horse Show. It was the first time Prince Philip had been seen in public since he left King Edward VII Hospital on April 13. It looks like the 96-year-old is making a speedy recovery.

He was spotted driving his Land Rover Discovery vehicle at the third day of the annual equestrian event. Pictures showed the Duke having a conversation with the Queen through the window of his car and looking in high spirits.

“His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London this afternoon, for planned surgery on his hip which will take place tomorrow. Further updates will be issued when appropriate.”

Although he has officially stepped down from all royal duties, he was forced to miss several important events including the traditional Easter Sunday service and the Maundy service. He has attended a total of 22,219 solo engagements since 1952 and has given up some special causes that are very close to his heart since stepping down.

There were fears his recent surgery would mean he would miss watching Prince Harry wed former actress Meghan Markle next weekend. Earlier this month, Kensington Palace said Prince Harry would be supported on his big day by The Queen, Prince Charles and brother Prince William. It didn’t confirm Prince Philip would be in attendance.

The Mirror reports Prince Philip should be in good health for the big day next Saturday and say he has even ditched his crutches after his surgery.

As for the Queen, she was all smiles as she happily mingled with other spectators at the ritzy event. And, at 92 years old, she proved she was every bit as stylish as ever.

Her Majesty opted to keep herself warm on the chilly British day and wore a colourful floral scarf over her head. She matched it with a navy blue quilted diamond jacket. She topped off the look with a pair of sunglasses and a knee-length skirt.

What do you think? Have you ever had a hip replacement? How long did it take you to get back to normal health?
