Prince George is following in his father’s footsteps by becoming a boarder at Eton College, one of the most famous and prestigious schools in the world.

Prince George will continue a family tradition when he starts at Eton College, the elite school which has produced 20 British prime ministers.

George, 13, is following in the footsteps of his father William, the Prince of Wales and Uncle Harry, the Duke of Sussex, who both attended the elite school.

George will start as a boarder at Eton College on Monday, a school that has a reputation for instilling self-reliance and leadership as students have to fulfil many non-academic tasks.

The young prince previously attended Lambrook School, the private prep school in Berkshire, also attended by his siblings Princess Charlotte, 11, and eight-year-old Prince Louis.

Admission is rigorous, with the boys going through stringent tests, and parents pay an annual fee of stg63,298 ($A118,791) for a school whose name is likely to be more influential than the academic qualifications gained by pupils.

Its roll call of famous past pupils includes actors Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Eddie Redmayne, a large number of prime ministers including David Cameron, writers George Orwell and Ian Fleming, and adventurer Bear Grylls.
