She’s just spent several days in the US as part of a state visit and Brigitte Macron has now revealed what life in the White House is really like for Melania Trump.
The 65-year-old, who is married to French president Emmanuel Macron, said the first lady of the United States doesn’t have a lot of freedom, telling French publication Le Monde “she cannot do anything”.
“She can’t even open a window at the White House,” Macron said. “She can’t go outside. She’s much more constrained than I am. I go out every day in Paris.”
The former drama teacher said despite how she expresses herself in public, Trump is actually a very happy person. She described her as “really fun”.
“We have the same sense of humour. We laugh a lot together,” she said. “She’s someone who has a strong personality, but works hard to hide it. She laughs very easily, at everything, but shows it less than I do.”
Macron also added that she had to be careful what she said and admitted that while she has more freedom than Trump does, she also has to hold herself back in the public eye.
It’s not the first time concerns have been raised about Trump. During this week’s state visit, viewers watching at home noticed tension between the president and his wife. At one point during a welcoming ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, Melania could be seen pulling away from her husband as he tried to hold her hand.

It’s one of many times she’s been caught denying her husband’s affection in public.
Still, it seems as though the US president is trying hard to make it seem like he and his wife are stronger than ever. He recently emailed his supporters and thanked his wife of 13 years for all she’s done. It comes after he faced allegations of an affair by a porn star.
“Melania is my rock and foundation, and I wouldn’t be the man I am today without her by my side,” the president wrote in the email. “She’s the cornerstone of our family, and an incredible mother to our son, Barron. I’m so proud of her accomplishments, and I hope you’ll wish her well on her special day.”
The first lady celebrated her 48th birthday on April 26, where she thanked her supporters for their well-wishes in a Twitter message.
