As anticipation mounts among royal enthusiasts for the impending moment when Princess Mary ascends to the throne as the Queen of Denmark, the Danish royal family has unveiled a cascade of details, including new royal titles and a new line of succession.

In an official communication from The Danish Royal House, details regarding the forthcoming titles for key members of the Danish royal family, as Prince Frederik and Princess Mary prepare to ascend to the throne, have been unveiled.

On Sunday, January 14, HRH The Crown Prince will undertake the responsibilities of the Danish throne, embracing the regal title HM King Frederik the 10th. Simultaneously, HRH The Crown Princess will be recognised as HM Queen Mary, and the esteemed couple will henceforth carry the collective title of The King and The Queen of Denmark.

In a significant realignment of the royal succession, HRH Prince Christian, the couple’s eldest son, assumes the role of heir to the throne, now to be addressed as HRH Crown Prince Christian.

Following the transition of power, HM The Queen will retain her esteemed position as Majesty, continuing to be addressed with the regal title of HM Queen Margrethe.

Amalienborg, the official residence for the Danish royal family, will no doubt have been a hive of activity lately after Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication following an illustrious 52-year reign, setting the stage for Princess Mary to ascend as the next Queen of Denmark alongside her husband.

The 83-year-old Queen reflected on her decision, citing a successful back operation earlier in the year that prompted contemplation about the future.

“The surgery naturally gave rise to thinking about the future – whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation,” the Queen said while announcing she was stepping down.

“I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as queen of Denmark.

“I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”

As Denmark and the global community brace for this momentous shift, all eyes are centered on the Australian-born princess. Having won the heart of the Danish heir during the 2000 Olympics, she is poised to create history as the first Australian to assume the esteemed title of queen.
