Could bakuchiol be the gentler alternative to retinol your skin needs?

Retinol has long been considered one of skincare’s most reliable ingredients for improving fine lines, uneven texture and pigmentation, but not everyone’s skin appreciates the peeling, dryness and irritation that can come with it. That is where bakuchiol comes in.

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived antioxidant traditionally extracted from the seeds and leaves of the babchi plant. Although it is often described as a “natural retinol”, it is not a retinoid and has a completely different chemical structure. Instead, it appears to influence some of the same processes in the skin, supporting collagen production and cell renewal to help soften the appearance of lines, improve texture and create a more even-looking complexion.

Research is still limited compared with the decades of evidence behind retinoids, but the results so far are encouraging.

This makes bakuchiol an appealing option for people with sensitive or easily irritated skin, as well as those who have tried retinol and found it too harsh. It also has antioxidant and soothing properties, and unlike many retinoids, it can generally be used during the day as well as at night. It is still sensible to introduce any new active gradually, patch test first and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning.

If you are ready to give it a try, these bakuchiol-infused serums, moisturisers and balms offer something for almost every type of routine.
