Cycling champion Anna Meares has welcomed her first child with her partner, the country’s national sprint cycling coach Nick Flyger.

The 36-year-old Olympic gold medallist revealed that their daughter was born at 12.07am on February 10, weighing 3.39 kg. Anna also revealed the traditional name they have given the adorable newborn, revealing she will be called Evelyn Bette Meares Flyger.

“Better than any medal or title I have ever won, The day that I became a mum,” she wrote on Instagram on Tuesday afternoon, as she shared a series of sweet images of herself and Nick just moments after Evelyn was born.

She also shared an image of Evelyn wrapped tightly in a brightly-coloured blanket and one of the couple beaming proudly as they held her up to the camera.

Fans were quick to congratulate the couple on their new arrival, with one person writing: “Congratulations Anna ! Yes you are not the first one to say that’s better than any medals. Enjoy!”

Another said: “Wonderful. Congratulations and enjoy the beautiful ride of motherhood.” While another commented: “Congrats to you both!! Between you and nick that kid has got the best start anyone could hope for.”

The cycling champion announced the happy news that she was expecting her first child in September last year, when she said that the exciting news ranked above all of the successes she enjoyed throughout her career.

“This is the one thing that I’ve always wanted that I’ve never had,” Meares told the Adelaide Advertiser. “In context of titles, being a parent, for Nick being a dad and me being a mum, I would put that above everything I’ve ever done. In some ways, I wasn’t sure I’d ever get this chance so it’s really special now that we have.”
