Here’s your chance to help change the narrative for older Australians! The Albanese Labor Government is calling for applications from passionate older Australians with lived experience of the aged care system to join the Aged Care Council of Elders starting January 2026.
What is the Council of Elders?
The Council is a vibrant, diverse group representing the authentic voices and faces of modern Australia. Created after the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, the Council gives direct advice to Government on how to support older people, protect their rights and dignity, and improve the quality and safety of aged care.

Why Should You Get Involved?
Minister for Aged Care and Seniors, Sam Rae, says it best:
“The Council of Elders plays a crucial role in bringing a range of diverse views and insights to Government when it comes to aged care. I encourage every older Australian with lived experience of aged care and active community networks to nominate as a member of the Council of Elders. Membership of the Council is a unique opportunity to represent the community and work alongside the Government to build an aged care system that delivers world-class care for every older Australian.”
What do you get in return?
Council of Elders members are reimbursed for their time and associated business expenses. The specific amount of payment is negotiated individually before appointment and depends on factors like the member’s role and time spent at formal meetings. The Council follows the Department of Health’s Remuneration Framework for Members of Non-Statutory Committees, so rates can vary and are not uniform for all members. In short, while it is not a traditional salary, there is payment for time and expenses involved in taking part as a Council member.
