As the weather warms up, the fruit flies emerge from wherever they’ve been in the last three months of winter to descend on our fruits once more. These pesky buzzers do a number on the hygiene of our homes and are all-around annoying, especially when you hear them as they zip past and around your head.

And in this economy, buying a spray off the shelves can be yet another expense we don’t need — so why not make your own DIY fruit fly trap?

This one not only traps the flies without harsh chemicals floating around, but also adds a fresh lemon scent to your kitchen.

Step-by-step guide

1. You will need a lemon, a plastic container, a screw driver or cutter.

2. Cut a tiny hole in the lid with the cutter or heat the head of a screwdriver to melt a hole in the lid like below.

3. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze out some of the juice into the container. Put the squeezed half lemon inside the container and close the lid. Done!

The fruit flies will get attracted to the citrusy scent and remain trapped inside. Once full, simply pour a little water through the lid’s hole, microwave the container for 15 to 30 seconds and rinse the container out. Add half a lemon every time you wish to reuse the trap.

This video will show you how to do it…
