Share:

With Christmas fast approaching, many of us are making plans for going away.

Unfortunately, with Christmas and the holidays falling in summer, it can have an impact on your garden.

In summer your garden needs regular watering to beat the heat, and if you’re going away for an extended period, your garden can flounder.

You could ask the neighbour to water them for you, but that’s not always an ideal situation.

Luckily, there are some easy DIY tips out there for watering your plants while you’re away from home.

1. Wine bottle waterers

You can easily turn a wine bottle into a waterer for your plants. First, wash the bottles and remove the labels., then fill the  bottle with water . Then drill or punch a small hole in the cork or lid of the bottle. If the bottle doesn’t have a cork or a lid, tie some fabric firmly over the opening with a piece of string or rubber band. Then, all you need to do is bury the wine bottle opening first 2 to 3 cm deep in the wet soil of a pot plant and leave it. The water will slowly leak from the bottle over time, watering your plants gradually. It’s a pretty handy tool to have if you’re going away for a period of time.

2. Plastic bottle waterers

Just like the wine bottle waterer, this is an easy DIY watering tip! Basically, you follow all of the instructions for the wine bottle waterer. Make sure you a punch hole in the lid of the bottle or you can go buy a screw-on funnel-shaped irrigation spikes from your local hardware. Any plastic bottle will do the trick from water bottles to soft drinks bottles and milk bottles.

3. Make a watering system using string and a jar/bottle

This tip is a little bit more complicated but many swear by it. First take a jar or bottle and place it higher than your pot or garden. Then grab a length of nylon or wool string, making sure it’s water absorbent. Run the string from the bottom of the jar/bottle to your plant, burying the end 2 to 3cm deep in the soil. Then, all you need to do is fill the jar or bottle with water. The string will soak up the water, carrying it gradually to your plants roots.
