Dr Jill Biden and Carrie Johnson haven’t been in the gig for too long, but both ladies are proving to be quite the first ladies of fashion in their own rights.
The US first lady and her husband President Joe Biden are currently in the UK for the G7 Summit, and the pair met up with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his new wife Carrie ahead of the political formalities on Thursday.
For the outing in St Ives, Cornwall, Dr Biden made quite the fashion statement in a stylish black blazer by Zadig & Voltaire with the word ‘LOVE’ outlined in rhinestones across the back. Political commentators have already pointed out that the first lady’s blazer is a stark contrast to a look sported by her predecessor Melania Trump, who in 2018 famously wore a coat emblazoned with the words ‘I really don’t care, do you?’ when traveling to the Texas border to meet migrant children who had been separated from their families.
Asked about her look by Bloomberg News reporter Jennifer Jacbos, Dr Biden said she was all about spreading the love.
“Well, I think that we’re bringing love from America. I think that this is a global conference and we’re trying to bring unity across the globe and I think that’s important right now that you have a sense of unity.”
She paired the blazer with a fitted, spotted midi dress and a pair of black pumps.
The new Mrs Johnson, on the other end, is generating public interest thanks to her affordable shopping habits. The prime minister’s wife is making quite the name for herself as the ‘unelected pin-up for rental fashion’, as fashion and lifestyle magazine Tatler describes her, and opted for a £325 (A$594) red dress by British affordable luxury brand LK Bennett.
The British press went mad for the political activist after it was revealed the wedding dress she wore to say ‘I do’ at Downing Street in May was in fact rented for just £45. The gown by Greek designer Christos Costarellos would usually cost £2,830 brand new.
She has also sported a number of rented gowns at political events since entering the public eye and is being credited for her no-nonsense approach to fashion on the world stage.
