Get creative with transeasonal style from winter into spring

The changing of the season seems so much more complicated when compared to changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace. Those guards know exactly what to expect, they are familiar with the drill. They’re in control, right?

However, we are conditioned to smile and be gracious, whilst, on the downside for the guards, they are not allowed to smile or react when anyone outside their regiment addresses them. I’d be fired within a week as I’d get bored wearing the same uniform every day, for starters, and might try to add a little scarf or bling to elevate the look. I’d also find it impossible not to smile or stick my tongue out at rude tourists gawking or trying to be comedians to get a reaction from the guards on a dare…

With our blue planet going through constant changes, especially our weather patterns, I hear sighs of despair from those not knowing what to wear from one day to the next in our vast country now in the throes of shedding its winter hues into magical spring.

While it’s been raining in Sydney, some Gold Coast ladies are complaining about having to wear knitwear. In Melbourne, we have a colder winter, which I adore, and now that the season is slowly changing to some warmer days, yet unpredictable in its mood swings between sunshine, chill and rain, being prepared is key to feeling fabulous and in control, whatever the weather.

Once we have our basics sorted, adding layers to a capsule wardrobe becomes fun and it gets our creative styling mojo working. Layers are our friends. Short-sleeve knitwear, basic shirts, lighter sweaters, short and longer cardigans, vests, scarves, and coats will never let us down.

Starting with a neutral palette works best for me as it’s so easy to keep it classic and to simply add a pop of pastel or deeper colour to lift the mood when required. We know our favourite colours, especially when they complement our complexion and appearance, so, stick to what works to avoid the chaos…

Items I cannot do without to add some class and verve to an outfit include ageless scarves, statement sunglasses in classic black or brown frames, a tweed coat, a structured leather handbag in black or brown, and some of my favourite colours to spruce up the neutral basics when I need that extra lift.

Colours currently trending include lilac, burgundy, utility/olive green, beige, rust and further shades of brown, tan, white, pastel blue, shades of red, and coral. Many of us already have these hues in our wardrobe. However, being different is always okay by opting for the colours we know enhance our style. This is not the army where we follow blindly, after all. We own us, double cheers and salutations to that!

Ah, and then there is the piece de resistance, our favourite perfume. A dear old friend recently told his wife there was nothing more alluring than a well-groomed, stylish woman wearing a beautiful perfume (and she certainly fits that profile). The man knows stuff and I understand why his wife adores him…

We, as a layered, complex, interesting species, own our look and when we’ve constructed an outfit in such detail for it to seem effortlessly gorgeous, we’re exactly where we deserve to be, on top! Confidence is the best accessory and feeling fabulous is important for our state of mind. We are older, not over.

Here’s hoping some of the ideas below will inspire you to be the best version of you during this journey from winter into spring. Pic L-R (1.) A floral shirt dress in deep hues of blue could be worn with pumps, sandals, or boots. You could add a long cardigan or coat if required for an outer layer. It is also ideal for resort wear. (2.) Cream is an easy start to building an outfit, and here the wide-leg pants and cotton-knit sweater are the stars. (3.) The same cream wide-leg pants, this time worn with a lighter knit with black trim, and I’ve added a pearl-chain belt to style it up. (4.) Taking the cream pants and a cornflower-blue sweater up a notch by adding a silk scarf and pearl earrings. The scarf picks up the blue and throws a happy shade of yellow into the mix.

Pic L-R (5.) The mint-green sweater elevates these wide-leg tan pants, and the detailed belt blends in whilst creating that added luxe look. (6.) A matching mint-green wrap scarf adds warmth when the weather is not playing nice. (7.) Don’t be afraid to wear the deeper winter shades on colder days. Burgundy has been high on the fashion charts for winter and the colour is also featuring for summer. For now, the suede straight-leg pants, boots, scarf, and black and white tweed coat will keep the chill out without looking dull. (8.) A patterned or classic shirt, cream pants, and a navy sweater vest are ideal for nonchalant elegance and warmth.

Pic L-R (9.) Add a maxi cardigan and scarf to the shirt and vest layers on colder days. (10.) When you love black but not in the mood for all-black styling, add warm brown boots, and a scarf that flatters your face, which should always be the focus. (11.) This timeless look, favored by style icons of an elegant era, such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelley, never gets old. Straight-leg navy pants, a navy and white striped sweater, and a classic, nautical scarf for that Riviera vibe. (12.) The same navy pants, always versatile to style, this time worn with a navy cashmere sweater, beige pumps and belt, with a playful little scarf featuring red to add a sense of fun. If navy dulls your skin tone, simply wear the scarf around your neck instead to flatter your face.

Pic L-R (13.) A short-sleeve sweater in a happy shade of pistachio, worn with beige seamed pants, and a beige cardigan if required. (14.) The same beige pants, this time worn with a silk shirt and feminine pink cardigan. Cardigans are big again, so, haul out the old ones and indulge in something new to complement your wardrobe. (15.) A light knit sleeveless top and pants set in soft grey, and I’ve added a light coat in coral and a patterned scarf for a pop of joie de vivre on a chilly day. (16.) Back to the classic shirt dress, so versatile to wear as a dress, over pants, and even as an added layer. I’ve styled it with a vintage brown and gold belt to complement the dominant white. However, if you don’t like to draw attention to your waist, I suggest to simply wear pearls or gold and silver accessories around your neck to draw attention to your face. The straight-leg satin pants in old gold would take this look from lunch to dinner.
