Scrabble has entertained the masses for years, with millions racking their brains thinking up creative words and ways to best their rivals.

But while families around the world have come to love the iconic green board, the company behind the game has decided to give it a makeover with a modern twist.

This year, in celebration of its 70th anniversary, Scrabble will be sold in a sleek black-and-gold design, with the board, tile pieces and letter stands transformed into something more in line with stylish, modern households.

Deciding the old version was in need of an upgrade, Mattel, the company behind the game, said it was “adapting to modern life” and creating a board that would look right at home in even the most luxurious apartment. But while a makeover is always a bit of fun, fans of the original will no doubt be holding on to their worn-out versions to remind themselves of all the fun that was had at family gatherings and cosy nights in with friends.

The iconic board game has been a hit with all generations, with many grandparents learning the rules as a child and now teaching their own grandchildren how to play. In fact, Scrabble is so popular that according to Mattel, more than eight games are started every second around the world, making it one of the most popular board games in action today.

To play, participants work against each other, using a random selection of letters to create words and win themselves points. While the letters ‘Z’, ‘X’ and ‘Q’ are some of the most difficult to use, they are worth the highest amounts, so if you are able to rattle your brain and come up with a creative word, you might just win.

While Scrabble purists may prefer the original, more nostalgic version, the transformation of board games isn’t anything new. Monopoly has released various special editions over the years, with everything from junior versions, to Disney, Star Wars and Game of Thrones-themed boards getting a run.

Last year, three of the most iconic Monopoly tokens were given the axe as new pieces were introduced in their place. The thimble, wheelbarrow and the boot were all replaced by a gold T-Rex, rubber duck and penguin.

The 70th anniversary edition of Scrabble is available until stocks last. Meanwhile, you can still get your hands on the classic at major retailers.

Will you be purchasing the black and gold version? Or do you prefer the original?
