Yesterday one of our Starts at Sixty community members Jacqui shared on Facebook that she was dancing around to Tame Impala which is a psychedelic rock band from Perth. It got us thinking about some of the great modern bands today and wonder which ones our Starts at Sixty community are into?
Young New Zealand artist Lorde is only 17 but won a Grammy Award this week for her single “Royals”, it won Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. The catchy tune is a popular I am sure with many of you out there?
In a strong week of music ABC’s youth radio station Triple J held the annual Hottest 100 on Australia Day. Did any of the Starts at Sixty Community listen to the countdown?
It featured a great lineup of the best Australian music as voted by the public. The number one song was awarded to “Riptide” by Vance Joy. The catchy summer tune features a ukulele and speaks about coming of age, all the right ingredients for an Australian summer hit.
A personal favourite of mine is Birds of Tokyo and in particular their song “Lanterns” which spent a total of 9 weeks at number 1 in the ARIA Australian Singles Chart.
A big stand out hit was Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” this year the funk/disco inspired hit was played on heavy rotation on stations around the world and received the Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Group Performance at the Grammy’s this week.
I know a lot of people are into Adele and although she is only 25 her music and maturity in her lyrics almost seems timeless. She won her 10th Grammy this week with “Skyfall”, her song from the James Bond movie. It has also won the Oscar, the Golden Globe and the Grammy for Best Song from a Movie.
The stunning vocals of Matt Corby have also been recognised with the ARIA Song of the Year for “Resolution” in 2013 and “Brother” in 2012. A runner up in Australian Idol he has gone on to achieve terrific success.
Perhaps you have some more to add to this list? What sort of modern music are you listening to and enjoying right now?
