Is there anything more comforting than a mouthwatering cheese toastie, especially as the weather starts to cool across the country. And now celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has shared his own recipe for the “ultimate cheese toastie” on social media.

Taking to Facebook on Thursday, the ‘Naked Chef’ revealed he was inspired to reshare his recipe after watching an episode of MasterChef Australia. He wrote: “Those were some epic toasties on MasterChef Australia!! For those of you that now want to know how to make the best cheese toasties WITH A Crown – here’s Jamie’s MEGA cheese toastie.”

And if you want to give the dish a go yourself at home, all you’ll need is two types of cheese, bread, butter and some basic pantry staples. Here’s the recipe.

Ingredients

  • White bloomer loaf – two slices cut around 1cm thick
  • Butter
  • Red Leicester and cheddar cheese (or any cheese of your preference)
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Ketchup or sauce of your choice (optional)

Method

  1. Butter both sides of the bread. Then, grate your cheeses and pile a handful in between your slices of bread.
  2. Next, heat a non-stick pan over a low to medium heat and place your toastie in the middle, cooking for 3 minutes on each side. Use a heavy object – such as a book – to weigh the toastie down in the pan.
  3. Next, remove the toastie from the pan and scatter some additional cheese into the hot pan. Place your toastie back into the pan and scatter a pinch of cayenne pepper into the pan.
  4. To remove the toastie from the pan, insert a spatula underneath and lift very slowly (take around 30 seconds) until the excess cheese hardens into a ‘crown’.
  5. The final step is to scatter yet more delicious cheese into the pan, and place the toastie back on top of the cheese. Then, once cooked, leave for two minutes before eating.
  6. Jamie then recommends serving with condiments of your choice.

Jamie’s followers couldn’t get enough of the oozing cheese toastie, with one writing: “Jamie, I love a good toastie with cheese and butter.” Another commented: “Heart attack in a sandwich! Where’s my second helping?”

While another said: “The Masterchef Aus creations were good but not as awesome as your toastie Jamie.”
