I love to save money where I can, and why not save the environment at the same time? These 6 tips to making your own miniature garden will help you create an easy-care project that is not only sustainable, but looks great as well!
1. Use old cans as planters
Simply paint your old cans with cheap paint from the local craft shop, pop some soil and seeds in and voila!
2. Make jar herb garden
We all have jars lying around but did you know they can make attractive upcycled planters? Use them as you would a plant pot and decorate the outside as you wish.
3. Put seedlings in citrus peels
If you’re like me and some of our readers, you’ll have a lot of lemon peels left over, but did you know you don’t have to throw them out? Put some seeds in with soil and watch your plant grow in a unique holder!
4. Make upside-down planters
Milk bottles are great to recycle as plastic is a major part of our landfill. Give them a good wash then cut the bases off. Take your chosen plant (tomatoes are great) and feed the stem through the pouring hole, with the roots inside the bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with compost and soil and water it. Now you can set your milk bottles up in a sunny place, using a hook, and admire your handiwork!
5. Put succulents in tea cups
This one is so simple to do! Just plant succulents as normal but use any of your old tea cups and make a little collection on your window sill.
6. Use a shoe organiser to make a vertical garden
Even if you don’t have a shoe organiser around your house, you can buy them cheaply at a dollar shop. Fill the pockets with soil and various seedlings and you will have a beautiful, organised hanging garden in no time!
