Staying independent for longer is a balancing act

It’s a scary fact that more than a third of people aged over 65 suffer a fall that impacts their way of life.

A fall can cause serious injury and even affect your ability to live independently.

But combining balance and strength exercises can help you avoid this kind of accident and even prevent common ankle and foot injuries.

Balance is one of the four pillars of a healthy body, with the others being strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health.

One of the great things of balances exercise is that they can be done while you’re doing other activities. While you are preparing meals or brushing your teeth, you can stand on one foot, regularly swapping feet to exercise both sides of your body, while having the safety of the counter or bathroom sink to hold on to if you need it.

If you go to the gym you can stand on one foot while doing light weight exercises to boost your balance skills. The experts from Uniting suggest this easy exercise that will help to ensure you have a ‘balanced’ lifestyle.
