October’s Hunter’s Moon: Rethinking what we spend and value

Share:

With Rose Smith

With household budgets under pressure, October’s Full Moon in Taurus is encouraging us to take a closer look at our spending, rethink what we really need and find ways to make our money go further.

Taurus is the zodiac’s sign of money and possessions, and this Full Moon arrives alongside two planetary retrogrades.

This Full Moon, traditionally known as the Hunter’s Moon, is an opportunity to reconsider our relationship with money, what we value and how prepared we are to look after ourselves.

It is a time to be cautious with spending and start thinking about how we can become more resourceful, rather than always buying something new or relying on someone else to do things for us.

Taurus is an Earth sign associated with practicality, stability and material security. Slow and steady is the best mantra now.

In astrology, it is linked to personal finances, earning money and the possessions people accumulate. It is also ruled by Venus, the planet of love, money and values, which has been retrograde since October 3.

Venus is retrograde in Libra, bringing questions around relationships, fairness, self-worth and the financial give-and-take in our lives.

Old feelings or unresolved issues may resurface for review, particularly where money is tied up with other people.

A time to check the fine print

The Full Moon also coincides with Mercury turning retrograde on October 24, which I associate with reviewing contracts, agreements and financial transactions.

Take extra care with purchases and financial arrangements, and check the details rather than rushing into commitments. Both planets remain retrograde until November 14.

Adding to the intensity, the Full Moon forms a near-exact square to Pluto in Aquarius.

This brings a slow but powerful pressure for change, particularly around control, security, friendships, group dynamics and long-term goals.

Pluto doesn’t do anything quickly, but it does do it deeply.

It’s asking where your money and your sense of security are really coming from, and what you might need to change.

What the Full Moon means for four zodiac signs

The Full Moon is likely to be felt most strongly by people with Taurus, Scorpio, Leo or Aquarius prominent in their birth charts.

These are the zodiac’s four fixed signs, associated with determination, stability and a reluctance to let go.

My money tips for each sign:

  • Taurus: Cut back on comfort spending and impulse purchases. Commit yourself to only buying things that truly reflect who you are.
  • Scorpio: Review debts, joint accounts and anything you share financially with others. Clarify expectations and make sure the give-and-take feels fair.
  • Leo: Be wary of spending to impress and ask yourself what really adds value.
  • Aquarius: Review household spending and focus on building a more stable foundation for the future, rather than taking on extra costs to meet others’ expectations.

Making what we have go further

People can start making their money go further through simple changes, from repairing items instead of replacing them to buying second-hand, learning practical skills and finding new uses for things they already own.

I also encourage people to think about whether a purchase will offer lasting value, rather than short-term satisfaction.

If you can afford something now and it’s going to be a long-lasting item that has a function, that’s different from buying something that’s just a bauble.

October’s Full Moon is traditionally known as the Hunter’s Moon, a name rooted in Northern Hemisphere autumn traditions, when communities prepared food and supplies for winter.

Here in Australia, with spring under way, the same theme of preparation and resourcefulness is a fitting reminder to make what we have go further.

The Taurus Full Moon also raises a bigger question about the role money and possessions play in our lives.

People could really be looking within themselves and thinking about how important money is to them.

But is it the most important thing?

The Full Moon in Taurus reaches its peak on Monday, October 26, at 3.12pm AEDT (2.12pm AEST in Queensland, 12.12pm AWST in Western Australia).

FULL MOON HOROSCOPES

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

It’s all about your money, possessions and sense of security. You could reach a financial turning point or realise that something you’ve been paying for simply isn’t worth it anymore. Venus in your relationship zone brings the balance between your needs and someone else’s into question. An old conversation about money, give-and-take or expectations may need revisiting. Pluto stirs things up with friends and groups, so tension might arise to complicate matters. You can care about people without funding every plan or proving your loyalty.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

The lunar spotlight is on you, Taurus! It’s about your needs, feelings and personal goals being front and centre. Something you’ve been holding back could finally need saying, especially if you’ve been making too many compromises. Venus, your ruler, is retrograde in your work and wellbeing zone and invites you to revisit routines, responsibilities or an unresolved workplace issue. Do notice where being helpful has become exhausting! Pluto adds tension in career or reputation when you may feel expected to do more or take on extra responsibility. A clearer boundary could help you balance professional demands with your wellbeing.

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

It’s time to visit your quiet zone, where rest and reflection are more appealing than another packed schedule. Something you’ve pushed aside may need attention, so give yourself space to hear what you’re feeling. Venus in your romance and creativity zone could revive an old attraction or unfinished project. Enjoy exploring, without rushing to commit. Your beliefs or future plans are challenged somehow, and you might feel as if you’re supposed to have all the answers. You don’t. Step back, question what no longer fits and let your next move take shape. A little downtime could help you see things more clearly.

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

This Full Moon highlights friendships, group commitments and the goals you’re working towards. You might see who genuinely supports you, or realise a shared plan no longer suits your priorities. Venus in your home and family zone could bring an old domestic issue back into conversation. Give yourself room to reconsider what feels comfortable. Shared finances, trust and money could complicate a friendship or collective effort. Be clear about what you’re willing to give, both emotionally and financially. Choose commitments that leave space for your needs too.

Leo (July 23 to August 22)

Career, reputation and responsibilities become more important now. A project could reach a turning point, or you may realise you want something different from your working life. Venus in your communication zone invites you to revisit a conversation, agreement or idea. Check the details before assuming everyone understands. Relationship intensity and someone else’s expectations could influence your next move. Listen, but leave room for your own ambitions. You don’t need to turn every disagreement into a showdown. Clear words and realistic boundaries can help you move forward without promising more than feels right.

Virgo (August 23 to September 22)

Travel, study and the bigger picture are highlighted now. You could reach a milestone or discover that a plan needs adjusting now you know more about what’s involved. Venus in your money zone encourages you to review costs and priorities. An appealing opportunity still needs to fit your budget. Your workload or daily responsibilities could become heavier, so finding time to explore something new might be a tad challenging. Start by questioning what genuinely needs your attention. You don’t have to abandon your ambitions because life is busy. Make some space for growth, without expecting yourself to manage everything all at once.

Libra (September 23 to October 22)

Things could get intense around shared money, debts and deep emotional ties, which are under the microscope. An arrangement involving joint resources or trust could reach a turning point, asking for greater clarity. With your ruler Venus retrograde in your sign, this is a deeply personal reset. Reflect on how much energy you spend accommodating others at your own expense. Pluto adds drama or intensity through romance, creative ventures or passion projects. Don’t get pulled into power games just to keep the peace. Be clear about what you are willing to give – and what you need in return. True balance begins with honouring yourself.

Scorpio (October 23 to November 21)

This Full Moon lands directly in your relationship zone, bringing a partnership, agreement or shared commitment to a head. You’ll see clearly whether a connection is balanced or draining. Venus in your subconscious zone suggests old romantic patterns, unspoken grievances or private doubts are resurfacing for closure. Give yourself time to process before reacting. Pluto in your home and family sector brings underlying domestic tensions to the surface. A shifting family dynamic might pull you in opposite directions. Speak your truth without defensiveness and remember that healthy relationships allow both people to evolve and have their say.

Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21)

Your daily work, health habits and routine are highlighted. If you’ve been running on overdrive, your body or schedule might insist on a reset. Look honestly at what is sustainable. Venus in your social zone invites you to reconsider certain friendships, networks or group causes. An old contact might re-emerge, or a collective project may need re-evaluating. Transformational conversations are also possible. Speak thoughtfully, as words hold extra punch right now. You don’t have to carry every task or attend every gathering. Streamline your days so you can focus on what genuinely sustains you.

Capricorn (December 22 to January 19)

It’s all about your creativity, joy or perhaps even romance! You’re being reminded now that life isn’t only about duty. A creative project, passion or dating dynamic could reach an exciting peak or ask for your honest commitment. Meanwhile, Venus in your career zone has you reviewing professional goals, reputation and workplace connections. Are you chasing milestones that still resonate with you? Your money zone continues to slowly transform, and financial pressure or shifting priorities could create some friction. Don’t compromise your happiness just to play it safe. Make room for what genuinely brings you alive.

Aquarius (January 20 to February 18)

Home, family and having a personal sanctuary take precedence now. A domestic matter, living situation or family conversation may reach a culmination, asking you to build a space that truly feels grounding. Venus in your sector of beliefs and learning encourages you to question long-held views, plans or future aspirations. Give your outlook room to shift – with Pluto in your sign, you’re in the middle of a powerful personal transformation. Old expectations are falling away. Focus on establishing a secure base where you can recharge and be entirely yourself, without apology. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen!

Pisces (February 19 to March 20)

Pisces, this Full Moon spotlights your communication sector, bringing an important conversation, idea or local project to a head. Something you’ve been mulling over could finally be ready to share. Venus in your zone of intimacy and shared resources asks you to review emotional boundaries, debts or mutual trust. Unresolved feelings around give-and-take may need gentle untangling. Pluto working through your subconscious twelfth house urges deep emotional clearing. Speak your truth with compassion, listen without taking everything on and trust that honest communication will help clear the air.
