Talking about the upcoming anniversary and cinematic event, Rieu says, “When I founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987, there were only twelve orchestra members – now there are more than 60 people on stage.”

“Although a lot has changed, there is one thing which has never changed: the joy of playing together, whether in a small group or a big orchestra. We are so much looking forward to bringing this joy again this year to your cinema in July.”

The maestro promises a diverse program from his romantic Dutch city.

The son of a of symphony conductor, 67-year-old Rieu was just five when he first picked up a violin. He admits the early days of learning the instrument were hard, partly because his beautiful, blonde violin teacher made it difficult to concentrate.

Rieu studied music at the conservatoire in Brussels, before forming his own orchestra and going on to make numerous albums and perform live all over the world as what many have dubbed the most successful pop-classical musician of all time.

The ‘Flying Dutchman’ is now one of the world’s most successful touring musicians, having clocked up 40 million album and DVD sales.

The Maastricht concerts are set against the stunning backdrop of the medieval cobbled town square. Ticket sales for previous shows have already broken records, making it the most popular music event in recent history.

Last year’s Maastricht concert was screened in 130 cinemas in Australia alone. This year’s special event, hosted by Channel 9’s Richard Wilkins, will be seen on Australian movie screens on July 29 and 30.

Viewing the concert with Event Cinemas gives you a front row seat to the spectacular musical event, with special backstage access, interviews with Rieu and his guests, and many more extra flourishes to enrich the experience.
