One of the most exciting and thrilling things about flash mobs is not knowing where or when they’re going to occur. For a group of students at a Victorian primary school, they got the surprise of their lives when their own teachers burst into spontaneous dance recently.

In a video shared on Facebook last Thursday, staff from Somerville Primary School joined forces for a hilarious dance routine. It occurred at the end of a school talent show – where students weren’t the only stars of the stage.

In just over a week, more than 1.2 million people have viewed the routine on Facebook. In the video, students can be seen watching on as three female teachers initially take to the stage. Some children begin to clap as the teachers get even more into the dance routine. After a while, four more teachers make their to the stage and also start dancing, much to the delight of their screaming students.

Even more teachers join in and adorably, students in the audience begin to mimic their teachers. The moment that really gets the kids going is when the school principal takes centre stage. Another iconic moment is when a male teacher performs a hand stand, while a female teacher does the splits to close out the show.

Appearing on 3AW radio on Friday, school principal Andrew Haley explained how the routine came to be.

“There’s definitely a couple of staff members that have got some very funky moves, which is good to see,” Haley gushed.

In the clip, he is the man who takes centre stage with a bushy beard and tie. He explained that staff had just three rehearsals before they made their debut in front of students.

Dancing to the catchy LMFAO track ‘Party Rock Anthem’, the teachers could be seen busting out an array of moves throughout the song. They were also spotted perfecting flossing, the latest dance craze where people clench their fists, swing their arms and repeatedly swing them from the back of their body to their front.

“The young kids these days enjoy the floss, so we put that one in there for them,” Haley said.

After a teacher suggested the staff get involved in the talent show, Haley agreed after some initial hesitation. A staff member had her camera at the event and filmed the dance, before uploading it online.

Fans have shared their delight in the video and posted messages for the teachers and school on Facebook.

One person wrote: “The very last lady that did the splits is my favourite I love her energy.”

Another comment read: “That was AWESOME!! The lady on the left has got some amazing moves and is totally into it! You can tell she loves what she does. Makes me wanna be a teacher LOL.”

A third asked: “Why weren’t our teachers ever this cool?”

Have you ever witnessed a flash mob? What do you think of this dance routine?
