Royal fans rejoice! A sixth (and final) season of The Crown has just been confirmed.

Fans of the hit Netflix series were left heartbroken in January 2020 when showrunner Peter Morgan announced to The Hollywood Reporter that the series was set to wrap up after season 5, saying it was “the perfect place to stop”.

However, soon after filming season 5, Morgan realised “to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons”.

So ahead of its highly anticipated launch, here is a round-up of everything we know so far about The Crown season 6.

What is the plot in season 6 of The Crown?

It is understood that the latest instalment of The Crown will be set in the Noughties, beginning around 1998 and concluding in 2005.

Morgan has clarified that the sixth season “will not bring us any closer to present-day” meaning events such as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s marriage and Megxit will not be included.

Earlier this year Netflix did have a casting call for the roles of teenage Prince William, Prince Harry, and Kate Middleton for the final season, so fans may get a glimpse of the budding romance between William and Kate in Season 6.

What years with The Crown season 6 cover?

According to Tatler, the last two seasons of the show will cover the “tumultuous era of the 1990s” when all three of the Queen’s children went through a divorce. It starts off with Princess Anne and Captain Mark Philips’ divorce in 1992, followed by the scandalous separation of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana in 1996, and then that of Price Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York, that same year.

Who else will star in The Crown Season 6?

31-year-old Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki will be taking over the role of Diana from season five’s Emma Corrin.

She will be joined by Downton Abbey movie actor Dominic West who will be taking over the role of Prince Charles from Josh O’Connor.

Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton will be reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth II for season 6, while Lesley Manville will be stepping into the role of Princess Margeret. Prince Philip will be portrayed by Jonathan Pryce

What is the release date for The Crown Season 6?

Production is expected to start later this year, as season 5 of The Crown is scheduled to for its release this November 2022. Fans are likely to expect the final season of their beloved show to hit screens sometime in 2023 or 2024.

Is there a trailer for The Crown Season 6?
