As families across the world settle in for another new year, 2019 comes hand in hand with a stream of long-anticipated movies that are set to leave fans in awe.

From a series of stunning Disney remakes, to moving and emotional historical dramas and romances, viewers can look forward to some huge blockbuster films once again in 2019 – and there’s guaranteed to be something for every age group.

Whether you’re planning a trip out with the grandkids, you and your friends want a light-hearted laugh or you’re looking for more of an intense drama or thriller, film bosses right around the world have lined up a major schedule. Here are some of the top picks for the year ahead:

For the kids:

Possibly one of the most anticipated movies of 2019 is the Disney remake of classic film The Lion King, set to be released around the world on July 19. The film re-tells the original story in animated form, with incredibly life-like animals appearing on-screen in the first trailer – released just weeks ago.

And it’s not the only classic being remade this year, as Disney’s Aladdin will also see another surge in popularity as the 2019 live action movie is released on May 24. Once again, the cartoon figures will be recreated in animated form giving a new, lifelike picture to the children’s hit film.

The Toy Story saga continues with Toy Story 4, released on June 20 in Australia and the following day in the UK and USA – a guaranteed hit with grandkids who have watched the original adventures of Woody and his friends. That comes just months after The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part debuts in February in the UK and USA, before being released on March 28 in Australia.

Elsewhere, for any Pokemon fans of any age, there’s huge news as new movie Pokemon: Detective Pikachu will be released in May in major countries around the world and on June 16 in Australia, while Marvel fans can expect to see Captain Marvel hit screens on March 7 in Australia, followed the next day in the UK and USA.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters continues the story of Godzilla in the next chapter from May 30, while kids will be delighted to see a new remake of classic tale Dumbo in Australia on March 28, before hitting the UK and USA the following day.

But giving them all major competition is the follow-up to huge sell-out film Frozen as the second movie Frozen 2 hits cinemas around the world in November, before debuting on Aussie screens on December 26.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle 2 is out in the UK and USA on December 13 (with an Australian release date yet to be confirmed), while kids can see their favourite pets come to life once again in The Secret Life Of Pets 2 from May 31 onwards in major cinemas around the world (with exact dates still to be confirmed).

Romance and comedies:

Sometimes you just want to sit back and have a good laugh and actress Rebel Wilson’s hit new movie Isn’t It Romantic is perfect for some good old time out either with friends or even on a solo cinema trip. She plays Natalie this time around, a woman who takes a bad fall and wakes up in her very own romantic-comedy. The film is set to be released (fittingly) on Valentine’s Day, February 14, in Australia.

Elsewhere, a classic will be brought back to life as a new Little Women movie is scheduled to debut in the USA on December 25. There’s no release date yet for Australia, but the film will move over to the UK in January 2020.

And another comedy classic will return in October, as The Addams Family is remade into an American 3D computer animated comedy film based on the comics by Charles Addams. It will hit the States on October 18 and the UK on October 25, with Australia’s release still to be confirmed.

Historical dramas and non-fiction:

She’s the Aussie actress that has stolen hearts right around the world, and Margot Robbie returns in smash hit movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood alongside Hollywood greats Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, to re-tell the true story of the Manson Family murders. It will be released on July 26 in the UK and USA, with an Aussie release date still to be confirmed.

And another hit movie set to make a bid for the top spot this year is Rocketman, focusing intimately on Elton John’s life and career – and it’s proved to be so hotly anticipated, it even featured on the John Lewis Christmas advert this year.

The singer will be played by actor Taron Egerton in the biopic, going right back to his early days on stage, and it will be released in May 17 in the US, followed by May 24 in the UK. According to Who, it will then move to Australia on May 30.

Thrillers:

A nail-biting thriller isn’t for everyone, but if it’s a terrifying hit that you’re after then Pet Sematary has already promised scares from start to finish as the first trailer was released recently.

The movie is a remake of the 1983 horror novel by American writer Stephen King, and 1989 movie of the same name. It will be released on April 4 in Australia and the following day in the UK and USA.

If science fiction is more what you’re looking for, then Brad Pitt’s new hit Ad Astra sees him star alongside a huge cast including Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland and Jamie Kennedy. The story follows Army Corps engineer Roy McBride as he travels through the solar system to find his lost father and understand why his mission to find life on Neptune failed. It will be released on May 24 in the UK and USA, with an Australian release date still to be confirmed.

Another thriller which promises an emotional roller coaster for viewers from start to finish is The Rhythm Section, following a woman as she seeks revenge against those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family. It’s out on February 21 in Australia, and the following day in the UK and USA.

Meanwhile, for fans of Bruce Willis, the final instalment of the Unbreakable film series, Glass, debuts on January 17 in Australia, followed the next day in major cinemas around the world.
