They’re gearing up for the biggest day of their lives, but not everyone is on board the marriage between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

On Sunday night’s episode of 60 Minutes, Australian author and feminist Germaine Greer spoke candidly about her opinion of the royal couple. From her brief chat with journalist Tara Brown, it was pretty clear she doesn’t think highly of them.

“I think Meghan’s probably realising now just how difficult the Royal Family is to stomach,” the 79-year-old said. When Brown asked why Markle would just be realising it now, Greer said it was because “they’ve got her”.

Greer, who has lived in the United Kingdom for 55 years, has had plenty of time to form an opinion on the family. She thinks they’re ludicrous, fearfully controlling and described their style as a “crime against fashion”.

She took particular offence to an outfit Markle wore last year at the Christmas Day Church service at the Church of St Mary Magdalene.

“They put her in that turd of a hat she had to wear at Christmas time. That brown thing,” Greer hissed. “It must have been uncomfortable and it was certainly ugly. You wonder, did they bring in a whole tray of turd hats and she chose the turdiest one so people would know how hopeless they were?”

She added that she didn’t think it was fair that the former actress had to give everything in order to marry Prince Harry, noting that she’d given up her career, her home country and even her religion in order to be accepted. When Tara questioned why Markle would do that, Greer was ready with a sarcastic response.

“Why would a girl born in poverty marry a man with 53 million quid? I can’t think of a single reason,” she said. “She expects to have a good time. She probably is in love with him. He’s glamourous – despite having red hair.”

She even said that she didn’t think the marriage would stand the test of time.

“I think she’ll bolt,” she said. “She bolted before. She was out the door. I hope, in a way, that she’ll bolt. Maybe she’ll take Harry with her.”

Greer concluded that she doesn’t support marriage in any form.

“I’m not actually in favour of marriage, I’m sorry to have to admit,” she explained. “I think it’s a hopeless system. It doesn’t deliver what it says on the tin. It doesn’t guarantee child support even. It doesn’t guarantee status in the community.”

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown said Markle had a lot to think about before making the commitment.

What do you think? Do you think Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will last? Are Germaine Greer’s comments valid, or was she out of line?
