Kiefer Sutherland has recalled an “extraordinary” day filming the famous courtroom scene in A Few Good Men with director Rob Reiner.
The 58-year-old star got the chance to watch Reiner at work when Jack Nicholson’s character Colonel Nathan Jessep shouts the immortal line “You can’t handle the truth!” in the 1992 legal drama.
Sutherland recounted the day for the upcoming TV special on CBS News: ‘Rob Reiner – Scenes from a Life‘.
“No one said a word, and Rob went up to Jack Nicholson and whispered in his ear, ‘Do you want to do another one?’ And Jack Nicholson said, ‘Well, we’re here’. So they did another one, and it was just as extraordinary.”
Reiner was so pleased with the scene that he allowed the cast and crew to go home early.
“They had planned to shoot the whole day, and Rob looked at everybody and said, ‘I couldn’t ask for anything more, so you guys all have the rest of the day off,” Sutherland said.
Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death at their home in Los Angeles last weekend and their son Nick Reiner has since been charged with first-degree murder.
The couple have been remembered as the “best friends” of their children Romy and Jake Reiner.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” Romy, 27, and Jake, 34, said in a statement.
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.
“They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
The siblings went on to thank people for their love and support and appealed for “compassion and humanity” when discussing the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,” they said.
“We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
