Six names tipped to replace Karl Stefanovic if he leaves the Today show

The veteran host first joined the program in 2005 and, aside from a brief and dramatic hiatus in 2019, has remained the face of Nine’s breakfast television ever since. But television, as anyone in the industry knows, loves nothing more than a succession plan.

Networks deny it publicly, of course. Executives insist everything is fine. There’s reports almost every day that Karl is investigating dumping his $2 million contract and moving to radio. Behind the scenes there are always lists. Always conversations. Always a handful of presenters who might one day slide into the chair next to Sarah Abo.

So, if Stefanovic ever did decide that two decades of 3.30am alarm clocks is quite enough for one lifetime, who might replace him?

Here are six names television insiders often whisper about.

1. David Woiwod

First up is David Woiwod, currently a presenter on Weekend Sunrise over at Seven.

He’s polished, confident and possesses that crucial breakfast-television quality: the ability to look cheerful before dawn without appearing medically unwell. Industry chatter has occasionally suggested Nine could attempt the classic television manoeuvre – poaching talent from the rival network.

It wouldn’t be the first time breakfast TV has resembled the Premier League transfer market.

2. Joel Dry

Then there is Joel Dry, who presents Nine News in Brisbane.

Dry has long been viewed within Nine as a rising star: authoritative enough for serious news but relaxed enough for lighter television. Networks often prefer promoting from within – it avoids expensive bidding wars and keeps the corporate family happy.

And if breakfast television loves anything, it’s a safe pair of hands.

3. Sylvia Jeffreys

Another obvious contender is Sylvia Jeffreys, who already lives comfortably within the Today ecosystem.

Jeffreys currently co-hosts Today Extra, but she also spent years reporting and presenting on the main program. She knows the studio, the producers, the rhythm of the show – and most importantly, she already understands the strange art of chatting about geopolitics at 7:15am before pivoting to a cooking segment at 7:18.

In television terms, that’s called versatility.

4. Tom Steinfort

Another internal option sometimes mentioned is Tom Steinfort, a longtime reporter on 60 Minutes.

Steinfort has spent years covering everything from politics to crime and human-interest stories, which gives him the sort of credibility networks like in a breakfast host – someone who can handle serious interviews but still discuss pancake recipes without visible discomfort.

Whether he would trade investigative reporting for daily sunrise banter is another matter entirely.

5. Peter Overton

Finally there’s the slightly left-field possibility of Peter Overton.

The veteran Nine News Sydney anchor has long been one of the network’s most trusted faces. While it would represent a significant change of pace, networks occasionally like to place a familiar and respected journalist at the breakfast desk to boost credibility.

And few people in Australian television are more recognisable than Overton.

6. The left-field option: Liam Bartlett

And then there is the wildcard: Liam Bartlett.

Best known for his work on 60 Minutes and currently at Seven Network, Bartlett has long been regarded as one of Australia’s sharpest interviewers.

But those who know him say something viewers rarely see on his serious current-affairs assignments – a wicked sense of humour and a love of mischief.

Which raises an intriguing possibility: place him in the more relaxed chaos of breakfast television and that personality might finally get to shine.

Imagine Bartlett, coffee in hand, leaning into the absurdity of morning television.

It would certainly be… different.

The reality: Karl isn’t going anywhere – yet … but the rumors are strong that he will leave before he is pushed with Nine’s Today Show still sitting off the pace behind Seven’s Sunrise.

Of course, all of this remains speculation.

Stefanovic continues to front the program alongside Abo, and there has been no official suggestion he is preparing to depart. In television, however, longevity itself tends to spark rumours.

After nearly 20 years on the same morning couch, viewers inevitably start wondering who might eventually take the seat.

For now, the answer is simple: nobody.

But somewhere inside Nine’s headquarters there is almost certainly a whiteboard with a few names written on it – just in case.
