Aussie tennis superstar Alex de Minaur has become the first Australian man to make the French Open quarter-finals in two decades following his latest triumph at Roland Garros.
Following his 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-3 victory over Daniil Medvedev on Monday, June 3, de Minuar has become the first Aussie man to make the last-eight since his idol, mentor and Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.
“It’s pretty extraordinary, if you ask me. I always thought that for me to play well on the clay I needed hot, lively conditions,” de Minaur said following his win.
“But this whole tournament has proven otherwise, right? It’s been a complete shock to the system, to everything I ever believed in.”
Despite losing the first set, de Minaur quickly recovered, winning 11 out of 12 games in the second set and establishing a 3-0 lead in the third.
Even though Medvedev intensified his efforts in the fourth set, it was insufficient to prevent de Minaur from clinching victory at Roland-Garros.
Despite being defeated, Medvedev was full of praise for his Aussie opponent.
“He played probably the best match we played,” he said
“I didn’t see him play like this before.”
Alongside Medvedev’s praise, fans from near and far were quick to congratulate de Minaur on his impressive win.
de Minaur will next face off against Alexander Zverev on Wednesday, June 5.
