Legendary broadcaster Brian Henderson has died following a battle with cancer. He was 89. According to a news.com.au report, “Hendo”, as he was affectionately known, died after his fifth battle with the disease.

Hendo hosted the Sydney weeknight news for Nine from 1957 until his retirement in 2002. However, most people probably remember him from Bandstand, the live pop music, variety television program which he hosted from 1958 until 1972. He ended up winning a Gold Logie for his hard work on Bandstand in 1968. In 2013 he received a second Gold Logie when he was inducted into the TV Week Logies Hall of Fame

Nine journalist Peter Overton broke the news on Ray Hadley’s radio morning show, saying he died early this morning. “He fought hard, he was peaceful and that’s what gave the family so much comfort,” he said. “Legend fits him perfectly.”

Meanwhile, others in the industry have since taken to social to share their heartfelt condolences. Television presenter David Campbell wrote on Twitter: “Brian Henderson has passed away. A legendary broadcaster and true gentleman. RIP to one of the greats.”

Weekend Today co-host Richard Wilkins tweeted: “A legend leaves us … Vale Brian Henderson. You were an inspiration to all. R.I.P. Hendo.”

Entertainment reported Peter Ford also wrote: “RIP Brian Henderson. For those in Sydney he was the face of 9 News for so long. Nationally always fondly remembered for Bandstand — the show that discovered and showcased Australia’s greatest music talents. By every account a charming and classy bloke.”

Meanwhile, Today host Karl Stefanovic called Hendo an absolute “legend”. “A gentleman and a total professional who provided guidance and inspiration for so many colleagues and generations who followed,” he said. “We loved him.”

Hendo is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mardi, along with daughters Jody and Nicole.
