It’s the highlight of his career so far and after giving what many described as the best acceptance speech of the night, Rami Malek took a stumble shortly after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 91st Academy Awards in Hollywood.
The incident is said to have occurred after the awards ceremony concluded. Pictures show the 37-year-old being lifted up off the floor by other members of the audience shortly after he won the award for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
His Oscar can also be seen on the stage as he’s lifted up in front of shocked onlookers.
In another picture, the actor can be seen talking to emergency medical services staff following the incident. In that photo, he’s sitting safely on a chair.
According to People, the fall occurred after the ceremony had concluded and the young star was surprised by what had happened.
The publication also claims paramedics treated the actor, but that his condition is not yet known. Concerned fans, who have seen the photos on social media, have expressed their concern for the star.
One person on Twitter said: “Weird question but does anyone know if #RamiMalek is okay after that fall? Greatest moment of your career and that happens, I hope he is okay.”
Another comment read: “#RamiMalek I hope you’re alright after the fall.”
Moments earlier, the actor took home the top gong for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody. He thanked his mum and paid tribute to his late father in his moving speech.
“My dad didn’t get to see me do any of this but I think he’s looking down on me right now,” he said to cheers from the audience. “This is a monumental moment, I’m so appreciative to all of you, to everyone who has had a hand in getting me here.”
He also acknowledged that he wasn’t the obvious choice to bring Freddie Mercury to life, but that it all worked out in the end. He also thanked Queen for letting him be part of their legacy.
“I think about what it would be like to tell little bubba Rami that one day this might happen to him. I think his curly-haired mind would be blown,” he told the crowd. “That kid was struggling with his identity, trying to figure himself out and I think to anyone struggling with theirs and trying to discover their voice, listen we made a film about a gay man, an immigrant who lived his life just unapologetically himself.
“The fact that I’m celebrating him and this story with you is proof we’re longing for stories like this.”
