Choosing the perfect baby name is one of the hardest and most tedious decisions parents can make. Hours upon hours are spent searching books, movies and television shows trying to find the perfect fit for the new little bundle of joy. But now mums and dads have an even trickier task at hand as a bizarre trend to create a new surname takes off.

No longer are children taking on their father’s surnames or even their mother’s, as whole families are transforming their identities, and choosing a brand new, made up names instead.

Mark McCrindle of McCrindle Research told the publication that thousands of Aussies are making the change annually and while it has its difficulties its making families feel more inclusive.

B Starbright and her partner Finn are just some of the parents taking on the new trend, explaining to Essential Baby they wanted to create a new last name that was unique and represented their family.

The couple, who aren’t married, said they didn’t have much of a connection with their birth surnames, and said creating their new surname Starbright was the best choice for them. B, who’s birth name remains a mystery, also changed her first name to B after deciding she was finished with the first name who parents gave her.

As for first names, they have changed drastically over the years as well with names such as Apple, Saint and Fish and Chips appearing on the register list. Earlier this year one mum called on the internet for advise after her friend chose what she called the “strangest baby name ever”.

Posting on the popular online forum Mumsnet, she revealed her friend had decided on the name Abcde for her newborn baby.

“The baby’s name is spelt: Abcde,” she wrote. “And pronounced: Ab-si-dee. I’ve never heard of this name before – has anyone else? Or any other crazy names you’ve heard of?”

What do you think of the latest surname trend? Do you like your name or do you fancy a change?
