We’ve all been in that situation where we’ve let the bananas in the fruit bowl go a little too ripe. You know your family well enough to know they’re probably going to avoid the spotty banana like the plague.

For most of us, the go-to thing to do with brown bananas is to make a delicious loaf of banana bread.

You might even be using a recipe that’s been passed down in your family for generations. If not, we’ve got a brilliant and easy banana recipe here.

While your loved ones probably won’t turn their noses up at a slice of the tasty cake-like treat, there are plenty of other things you whip up with a spotty banana. Here are six ideas you may not have thought about.

Banana Smoothies

If you’ve got a couple of ripe bananas and a house full of thirsty guests, why not whip up a tasty banana smoothie?

Simply peel the banana, chop it up and blend it in a blender with some ice, honey and milk. We promise your grandchildren won’t know the difference.

Banana Pancakes

For a tropical spin on the breakfast classic, those ripe ‘nanas are going to work like a treat (literally).

Mash some of the banana into your pancake batter, cook as normal, and watch your family fall in love with their new favourite breakfast.

Banana Toasties

Did your grandma ever feed you banana toasted sandwiches as a kid?

Mash the banana, add it to your sandwich and team with some peanut butter or hazelnut spread for an extra-sweet kick.

Banana Ice Cream

If you’ve got a sweet tooth but are sceptical of the amount of sugar in store-bought ice cream, here’s a brilliant hack for your soggy bananas.

Simply cut the banana into pieces, freeze, then pop into a food processor with milk when you get a sugar craving. The result is a scrumptious home-made banana soft-serve.

Banana Muffins

If you’re anything like us, you never need an excuse to pull out your baking trays to make some muffins.

Adding some banana to the mix is the perfect way to get rid of your old bananas and add some more flavour to your creations. We recommend combining another fruity flavour such as blueberries or strawberries.

Banana Porridge

If you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to get creative in the kitchen, why not try mixing some ripe bananas in with your morning porridge?

It will give you some extra energy for the day ahead and save you from wasting your bananas.

What is your favourite thing to cook with your old bananas?
