‘I only deep clean once a year’: Gran sparks debate over cleaning habits

Share:

Cleaning is a chore that many try to avoid for as long as they can, coming up with excuses or only doing the bare minimum every now and then to keep the home presentable. But one gran has taken it to the extreme, sparking a debate online over her lack of cleaning habits.

Taking to popular forum Gransnet, the woman queried whether she was taking it too far by only deep cleaning her house once a year. “AIBU (am I being unreasonable) to only deep clean once a year i.e. windows, doors and skirting boards etc,” she asked.

For the majority, cleaning isn’t at the top of the list but this woman’s confession seemed to shock most with a steady stream of “yes” responses.

“Yes, mine would be completely filthy after a year. I do windows monthly perhaps, maybe every 5/6 weeks. I do the skirting boards and doors weekly as part of normal clean. I have a big clear out once or twice a year but that’s doing things like emptying all of the kitchen cupboards and cleaning them out,” one person wrote.

While another was utterly disgusted by the gran’s minimal cleaning saying: “Sorry but find that disgusting. I do skirting boards every week and windows and cupboard doors once a month”.

Others were a little less harsh on the woman, claiming they too aren’t as vigilant with their cleaning methods either. “What’s the obsession with skirting boards. I only do them when the blood and wine stains start to look really manky. About every 6 years,” a fellow gran commented.

“I reckon you can have your house as you damn well please,” a second said.

No matter how often you choose to do a deep clean, the main consensus was that it depends on how often you are in your home and if you have any pets leaving fur around the place.

For this gran at least, that wasn’t a problem, as she later confirmed it is just her and her husband, so there is little mess.

“I guess if we did have others in the house it may get dirtier quicker so may do these things more often,” she explained. “I hate cleaning so it’s the job which will get left if I don’t feel like it or have time. [I] Always make sure kitchen and bathrooms are cleaned every week as a minimum. House is pretty tidy though and no ornaments to gather dust.”

Whats do you think? Is once a year often enough? How often do you do a deep clean?
