Snacking gets a bad reputation, but the right snack, eaten for the right reason, can genuinely support your health rather than undo it. As we get older, our protein needs actually increase, fibre becomes more important for digestion and heart health, and steady energy matters more than a quick sugar spike. These three snacks tick those boxes without sacrificing flavour – one baked, one no-bake, and one savoury – so there’s something for whatever kind of craving hits.
1. Homemade Oat and Fruit Slice
This slice is a genuine upgrade on shop-bought muesli bars, with none of the added sugar and preservatives, and plenty of genuine fibre from the oats and dried fruit.
Makes 12 pieces | Prep: 10 minutes | Cook: 25 minutes
Ingredients
2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/3 cup pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
1/2 cup dried apricots, chopped
1/3 cup sultanas or chopped dates
1/3 cup honey or pure maple syrup
80g butter, melted
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 egg, lightly beaten
Pinch of salt
Method
Preheat oven to 170°C and line a 20cm square baking tin with baking paper.
Combine the oats, almonds, pepitas, apricots and sultanas in a large bowl.
Whisk together the honey, melted butter, cinnamon, egg and salt in a separate bowl, then pour over the oat mixture and stir well until everything is evenly coated.
Press the mixture firmly and evenly into the prepared tin, using the back of a spoon to compact it well.
Bake for 22-25 minutes, until golden around the edges.
Cool completely in the tin before slicing into 12 pieces. It will firm up considerably as it cools.
Tips
Pressing the mixture in firmly is the key to a slice that holds together rather than crumbling.
Store in an airtight container for up to a week, or freeze individual pieces for up to 3 months.
2. No-Bake Protein Energy Balls
These come together in minutes, require no oven, and make a genuinely satisfying afternoon pick-me-up when energy starts to dip.
Makes about 16 balls | Prep: 15 minutes | Chill: 30 minutes
Ingredients
1 cup pitted dates
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup natural peanut or almond butter
2 tablespoons chia seeds
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup desiccated coconut, plus extra for rolling
Method
Soak the dates in warm water for 10 minutes if they’re firm, then drain well.
Combine the dates, oats, nut butter, chia seeds, honey and coconut in a food processor. Blend until the mixture comes together and holds when pressed.
Roll tablespoon-sized portions into balls, then roll each in extra coconut to coat.
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up before serving.
Tips
These keep well in the fridge for up to a week, or in the freezer for up to 2 months.
Swap the peanut butter for any nut butter you prefer, or add a tablespoon of cocoa powder for a chocolatey version.
3. Smoked Salmon and Cottage Cheese Cucumber Bites
A savoury, no-cook option that delivers a genuine dose of omega-3s and protein, perfect for when you want something light but satisfying.
Serves 4 | Prep: 10 minutes
Ingredients
1 large cucumber, sliced into 1cm rounds
1/2 cup cottage cheese
100g smoked salmon, torn into small pieces
1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Freshly cracked black pepper
Method
Arrange the cucumber rounds on a serving plate.
Top each round with a small spoonful of cottage cheese.
Add a small piece of smoked salmon to each, then scatter with fresh dill.
Finish with a squeeze of lemon juice and a crack of black pepper before serving.
Tips
These are best assembled just before serving, as the cucumber can release moisture if left to sit too long.
Swap cottage cheese for cream cheese or ricotta if you prefer a richer bite.
