For many viewers, the television weekend no longer begins on Saturday morning — it kicks off the moment the working week ends. Networks know it too.

Friday night schedules are increasingly packed with returning favourites, while Saturday and Sunday still deliver a great array of blockbuster films, reality juggernauts and live sport designed to capture and keep your attention.

Here are nine standout free-to-air highlights all worthy of some appointment setting with your favourite comfortable chair.

Times are in local AEDT, with all shows available on their respective apps either live or on catch-up. Highlights can often be streamed for several weeks after airing if you miss the scheduled broadcast.

Better Homes and Gardens: Friday — 7.00pm (Seven)

Seven’s long-running lifestyle flagship continues to anchor Friday night viewing with renovation inspiration, gardening tips and celebrity cooking segments. It’s a great way to kick off your weekend with some inspiration for upcoming projects around the home, ideas to spruce up your garden or exciting new recipes to try next time family or friends come over.

Gardening Australia: Friday — 7.30pm (ABC TV)

ABC’s evergreen horticultural series remains a quiet ratings achiever, offering practical advice alongside stories about sustainability and community gardens. Its reflective pace and scenic cinematography make it an ideal counter-programming option to louder commercial entertainment formats.

Men’s Football (Australia Vs Cameroon): Friday — 7.30pm (Ten)

The African footballing powerhouse of Cameroon are one of the highest profile teams to miss out on qualification for the upcoming World Cup, and will be playing for pride in this hit-out against the Socceroos. Meanwhile, Australia will see the international friendly as an opportunity to build cohesion and test combinations ahead of FIFA’s quadrennial showpiece in the US, Canada and Mexico in June and July. Legendary comedienne Comedian Denise Scott hosts the 2026 Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala, bringing together a stellar line-up of stand-up talent for one of the event’s biggest nights. Performers include Claire Hooper, Josh Thomas, Urzila Carlson, Sammy J, Matt Okine, Sashi Perera, Takashi Wakasugi, Ray O’Leary and Nath Valvo, showcasing a fast-paced mix of established favourites and rising stars.

Prisoner 951 (The Hostages Story): Saturday 9:40pm (SBS)
