There’s something so nostalgic about flipping through the newspaper to read the comic strips on the back page. Back in the day, without much else to occupy kids’ time, comic books were all the rage and keeping up with the crazy antics of your favourite superhero or gang of teenagers was usually the highlight of your week! Looking back, these are just a few of the popular comics we used to know and love when we were young.
Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy and his gang of mis-matched friends remain, to this day, one of the most popular comic strips in the world. The classic comic followed the adventures of the loveable loser, Charlie Brown, as he tackled everyday problems like his friend Lucy constantly pulling the ball away whenever he went to kick it or his unsuccessful attempts to fly a kite.
While Peppermint Patty, Lucy van Pelt, Franklin and Sally Brown were all popular among readers, it was usually Snoopy, the loyal dog who occasionally mocked his his owner, “The Round-Headed Kid”, that readers loved the most.

Archie Andrews represented the all-American teenager who drove a nice car, enjoyed lots of sports and played in a band. He was even a part of a classic love triangle, stuck between the literal girl-next-door, Betty, and the sultry and strong-minded, Veronica.
Whether he was sharing malts with the gang at Pop’s Chok’lit Shoppe, playing music for his self-named band, The Archies, or going on never-ending dates with his multiple love interests, Archie Andrews definitely kept himself busy in Riverdale.

The masked Ghost Who Walks has long been a popular comic strip around the world. Although he had no super powers, the Phantom was known as the man who couldn’t die thanks to his lifetime of knowledge gained from living deep in the jungle.
Doing everything to save his love interest Diana, riding his loyal horse, Hero, showing off his famous Skull ring, or residing away in the mysterious, Skull Cave were all part of the package for the purple-suited hero. Audiences were captured with the enigma that is the Phantom, as nothing explains him better than the classic line: “When the jungle sleeps, The Phantom wakes”.

A Yale graduate and a handsome polo player, Flash Gordon was the definitely one of the more pristine superheroes. He saved the world on multiple occasions with the help of his beautiful love interest Dale Arden and his friend Dr Hans Zarkov on their beloved planet Mongo.
The golden-haired hero remains to this day many people’s favourite comic book character thanks to all of the incredible science fiction adventures and battles he and his friends were a part of.

You can tell Walt Disney was someone special when his characters back then were just as famous as they are today. The different collection of stories in these comics included the beloved characters such as Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck, Mickey Mouse and Chip ‘n Dal. These stories of course also included Donald’s nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie and they were, of course, usually getting up to no good.
