1969: Motown brothers’ classic smashes charts

Share:

Released as the lead single in the band’s first studio album, this song went on to become one of the best known Motown tunes of all time.

The funky bass line, three-part vocal harmonies and catchy guitar chordal progression earned this song the title of Pitchfork Magazine’s ‘second best chorus of all time.’

Considered by many to be a love song, the band’s relatively young age had critics arguing whether this group of musicians could properly sing about romance.

Suitable or not, the single sat in the number one position in the US soul charts for over four weeks.

The song has sold over six million copies and is considered as the ninth greatest pop song ever produced, according to Rolling Stone Magazine.

Can you name this particular single?
