The first trailer for Spencer, the highly-anticipated biopic on Princess Diana, has been released online, and fans are loving it!
The one-minute clip was shared on YouTube and social media by Neon and shows Kristen Stewart, who you may recognise from Charlie’s Angels (2019) and Twilight, playing the people’s princess.
Stewart just utters two words in the short trailer, responding: “They don’t,” to Sally Hawkins’ character, who plays an undisclosed role that appears to be a confidant to the Princess of Wales, after she tells Diana: “They know everything.”
The trailer starts off by showing a glimpse inside the Queen’s luxurious Sandringham Estate before it flicks to a distressed Diana hiding in her bedroom. Another scene shows the royal family posing for their annual Christmas portrait, while others see the late princess getting hounded by paparazzi.
Directed by Pablo Larrain and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the film closely follows three days in Princess Diana’s life. The story takes place at the royal family’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk and will show the late royal grappling with the tough decision to leave her husband Prince Charles for good.
Stewart previously said the film is a “dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” news.com.au reported at the time. “It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
In real life, Diana and Charles separated in 1992 and formally divorced in 1996. She tragically died in a car accident in Paris the following year.
Fans went crazy over the clip, with many people praising Kristen for her portrayal of the late princess. “She’s pulled that off quite well. Body language and mannerisms, even Diana’s looks,” one excited fan wrote.
Another said: “God they really pulled off a miracle, this looks perfect in every sense.” While a third commented: “I’m so excited for this! Never clicked faster for a movie trailer! Kristen is absolutely going to kill it! Just give her the Oscar now!”
It comes a day after Neon released a still from the highly-anticipated film, which shows Stewart dressed in a luxurious ballgown and crying in the corner.
Spencer is set to hit theatres on November 4.
