Forget singing along to ABBA at home – fans will be able to step into the action when Mamma Mia! The Party arrives Down Under.
The immersive theatrical dining experience, created by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus, will make its Australian premiere in Sydney in March 2027, bringing a Greek feast, live music and a disco dancefloor to The Star at the Sydney Event Centre.
Set in a Greek taverna on Skopelos, where much of the 2008 Mamma Mia! film was shot, the production follows a romantic story that unfolds around diners.
A live band and a cast of 20 musicians and performers bring the story to life, soundtracked by ABBA hits including Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and Waterloo.
Following a four-course Greek feast, the evening culminates in a 1970s disco.
Australia has long been one of ABBA’s most devoted markets outside Sweden, with the group frequently citing the country as a key part of its early international success.
This makes Sydney a fitting next stop for the production.
“Bringing Mamma Mia! The Party to Sydney is a hugely exciting milestone for us,” Ulvaeus said.
“From the very beginning, this experience was created to bring people together through music, storytelling and joy, and it has been wonderful to see audiences in Stockholm and London embrace it so wholeheartedly.”
Ulvaeus said Sydney had “always felt like a natural next step”, describing it as “the perfect city” for the show’s next chapter.
Mamma Mia! The Party is celebrating 10 years in Stockholm and entering its seventh year in London, with more than 1500 performances to its name.
For Paul Dainty, president and CEO of TEG Dainty, bringing the production to Australia is a full-circle moment.
Dainty promoted ABBA’s first and only Australian tour in 1977, when the Swedish pop group sparked a frenzy among fans.
“Australia’s love affair with ABBA has never really ended – their music has become part of our cultural fabric,” he said.
“To be now working with Björn and Pophouse to bring this extraordinary celebration of ABBA’s music to Sydney feels like a wonderful full-circle moment.”
Dainty described Mamma Mia! The Party as “pure joy”, saying it offered audiences a new way to experience the band’s music.
Tickets go on sale on Thursday, November 12.
