Less mumbo jumbo: Everything you wanted to know about Wi-Fi

The internet is such a wonderful place, however to access it you need an internet connection.

As more and more Australians look to change their broadband plans to speed up their service or save money, there has become more confusion about which is the best deal, or even if what they’re getting is right for how often they use it.

We also get a lot of questions about what Wi-Fi is and how to operate it, so we did the hard work for you!

What is Wi-Fi?

A WiFi (wireless) connection uses radio frequency signals to send data between your modem and computers or other WiFi devices. WiFi means you can surf the net in different areas of your home without needing cables.

What do I need to use WiFi?

  1. An active internet connection.
  2. A router to send your internet as a WiFi signal. Most modems have this router ability built in.
  3. A computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet.

How do I set up my WiFi network?

If you bought your modem from an internet provider, its setup guide will tell you exactly how to set up your home WiFi. For third-party modems, check its user manual for instructions.

How can I connect to Wi-Fi?

A great way to save your phone data is to connect to Wi-Fi whenever you can. On iOS devices this is done by going Settings > Wi-Fi > switch on the Wi-Fi tab. Select the Wi-Fi network you wish to connect to and enter the password if required.

On Android select Settings > Wireless & networks > Wi-Fi settings > turn on Wi-Fi and connect to a specific network, enter the password if needed.
